October 24 Practice

After only a few practices, we’re beginning to gel as a team. Our fresh-meat skaters have been taking hits, blocking, learning to jam all while staying on their feet. Only a couple more weeks of practice in the season, then we’ll be on fall/winter break. But that doesn’t mean we won’t be skating at all!! Look for us at Spinning Wheels in Ogden, Skate North and South in Des Moines during break and ask us about deeeeerrrrrbbbbyyyyy! Our first home bout is tentatively scheduled for Feb 23 in Boone, Iowa (National Guard Armory). We’ll keep ya posted!.

Oct 17 Practice

Next practice: Wednesday, Oct 24- Spinning Wheels, Ogden, IA. 7-9pm

Our “fresh-meat” are coming along great! They are starting to learn the basics of the game. This practice focused on learning proper positioning while blocking and stopping the jammer (the opposing team’s scoring person - similar to a wide receiver or quarterback in football. They have a STAR on their helmet). There’s also a little time for some fun! Looks like a fun round of LIMBO was played as a warm up. It helps with agility on your skates.

Teammates wearing the same colors are allowed to grab and shove and lean on their own teammates. They may NOT; however, do that to any opposing players. Shoulders, hips, glutes and chest are legal hitting zones. Arms, elbows and heads are not allowed to be used as a form of stopping or blocking the opponent.

Fresh meat progress

I’m happy to share with you that practice last week went very well. Most of the our new recruits have remained dedicated in coming to practice and it’s showing in their progress! We started out getting pushed around a little and by the end of practice were taking some hard hits and remained standing, others are doing fantastic going from learning to skate again to gaining laps each week. Some are working on confidence, some are working on learning the game, some it’s about testing their patience. We are SO PROUD to share this progress with our fans.

We recently had a team meeting. Fall is typically off season for most teams. We made a strong attempt to find opponents to play; however, this time of year that proves to be difficult so the Nov 17th home bout we planned on has been cancelled. It’s disappointing because we LOVE DERBY so much!! But…it will give us plenty of time to focus on our new members and get them ready for spring. Soooooo…in the meantime, we will be getting our Spring 2019 bout schedule set - so keep an eye for us!

Getting back in the groove

Since our first practice back this fall (and with all of our new recruits), we have a fantastic group turning up at practice. Some skaters have been off wheels since childhood, but are getting their groove back with each practice. Vets are helping coach the fresh-meat but are also getting some playtime in. It’s a great time to focus on the newbies but also get some good hitting in!

Drop-Ins always welcome for $5 - come see us!

Resuming practice Fall 2018

Wow! what a fantastic turnout for our first day back to practice! We had 7-8 new “freshmeat” skaters and the majority of our vets showed up. It took a little time getting the newbies fitted for gear and getting waivers signed, but we managed to divide and conquer.

This fall, we have the opportunity to utilize Spinning Wheels skating rink in Ogden, IA as our practice facility. It’s a bit further drive than our former location, but our first practice there allowed us to see and experience a warm welcome from the owners and they were even able to assist the newbies with ordering gear directly through them.

It’s not too late to join us!
